Spotlight on Raven's Teacher, Laura Stahly-Dronkowski: Exploring Horizons in Progressive Education

This summer, our very own Laura Stahly-Dronkowski, Raven’s teacher, had the opportunity to participate in the four-day Progressive Education Network's Imaginative Inquiry Institute at Manhattan Country School in New York City. This Institute held annually, gathers educators from across the country who are committed to pushing the boundaries of traditional education and embracing more imaginative, student-centered approaches to learning.

Laura's experience at the Imaginative Inquiry Institute was nothing short of transformative. The institute focuses on the principles of Imaginative Inquiry, a teaching approach that encourages students to explore complex ideas and concepts through role-play, drama, and storytelling. By immersing students in a narrative or scenario, they are encouraged to think critically, solve problems creatively, and engage deeply with the material.

For Laura, this four-day intensive experience was a perfect match for her passion for creating dynamic, engaging learning environments. At The Marylhurst School, she has always been a champion of progressive education, constantly seeking ways to inspire her students and foster a love of learning. The Imaginative Inquiry Institute provided her with fresh insights and practical strategies to bring back to her classroom.

Reflecting on her time at the institute, Laura shared, "The experience was a game-changer for me. It reaffirmed my belief in the power of imagination in education. Imaginative Inquiry isn't just about making learning fun; it's about helping students connect with the material on a deeper level and see themselves as active participants in their own education."

Laura is excited to incorporate what she learned into her teaching practice this year. Whether it's using drama to explore historical events, creating immersive scenarios to tackle scientific concepts, or encouraging students to take on different perspectives in literature, Laura's classroom will be buzzing with energy and creativity.

At The Marylhurst School, we are incredibly proud of Laura's dedication to her craft and her willingness to embrace approaches that benefit our students. Her participation in the Imaginative Inquiry Institute is a testament to her commitment to providing an education that is not only rigorous but also imaginative and meaningful.
