Literacy Week & Read-a-thon

The week of April 14 - 18, The Marylhurst School will celebrate a much-loved annual tradition, Literacy Week! Literacy Week celebrates the importance of reading and writing as a daily practice. Literacy allows us to explore new worlds, ideas, and perspectives. We can be creators of stories and poems, learning to express ourselves through the written word. Additionally, literacy allows us to participate fully as citizens, providing a pathway toward advocacy and social change.

During Literacy Week, Marylhurst students will have an entire week to explore many aspects of writing, reading, and communication. They will have the opportunity to dress up as their favorite book character or author, create artwork, participate in a writing workshop led by a published poet, swap books with classmates, and read for an entire day during our Read-a-thon. Schedule coming soon!

The Read-a-Thon is particularly special because it connects our students’ love of reading with a shared purpose—helping to grow and enrich the classroom libraries they use daily. It’s a chance for students to celebrate stories and the power of reading while inviting their community to support something meaningful.

Here’s how to get involved:

Donors can contribute with cash or a check made out to The Marylhurst School. Please fill out the donor’s name and contact information on the donor form for an emailed receipt. Donations can also be made online. Just click on the QR code above. Students can start asking friends, family, and neighbors for fixed dollar donations on April 2, 2025, and we ask that all donations be turned in by April 18th. Thank you for supporting our classroom libraries!
