Exploring Art and Identity: Young Artists Find Inspiration in the Work of Jean-Michel Basquiat

Step inside the vibrant work happening in our Art Studio with teacher, Corrina del Valle. The Art Studio is a space where young artists immerse themselves in the habits of mind and body of what it means to be an artist.  Inspired by the groundbreaking artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, the current project encourages our students to explore fundamental art concepts such as line, shape, and color theory through a mixed-media approach.

Over the past few weeks, our young artists have diligently built their skills using various mediums, including watercolors, oil pastels, acrylic scraper painting, and printmaking. Each new material offers unique properties and possibilities, encouraging students to unlock their creative potential. Our emphasis on working slowly and thoughtfully allows time for experimentation and skill-building. By understanding how to use each medium effectively, students learn how these materials can interact and enhance one another in mixed media art. This deliberate approach fosters technical proficiency and inspires innovative thinking as they discover new ways to combine their artistic tools.

Art transcends mere technique; it serves as a means of expressing significant ideas and questions. Through their work, students connect with Basquiat’s themes of identity, social commentary, and urban culture, imbuing their creations with surprising and important meaning. This real-world application encourages them to reflect on their voices within a larger societal context.

Recognizing that every artist possesses a unique style, our studio promotes a personalized approach. Students choose their preferred methods and mediums, adapting projects to fit their interests and needs. This flexibility ensures that each child finds their inner artist, their means of expression.

As our students uncover the artistic world of Basquiat through their work, they also develop an understanding of broader artistic movements and societal issues.

Our Art Studio is a dynamic, hands-on environment where young artists thrive. We’re looking forward to a gallery show of their work in the winter!
