Celebrating Literacy Week at Marylhurst

This past week, our campus came alive with imagination, creativity, and the joy of storytelling as we celebrated Literacy Week at The Marylhurst School. From costumes to book swaps, writing workshops to art inspired by favorite stories, students fully immersed themselves in the magic of reading and writing.

Each day from April 14–18, we offered themed activities that brought literacy to life in engaging and meaningful ways:

Monday – Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character
Students arrived in costume as their favorite storybook characters, from classic literary heroes to modern favorites—bringing the pages of beloved books to life in our classrooms and hallways.

Tuesday – Banned Book Day
We celebrated the freedom to read by exploring books that have been challenged or banned throughout history. Students had thoughtful conversations about the power of stories and the importance of access to diverse voices.

Wednesday – Book Swap & Read-a-Thon
Books were exchanged, pillows were fluffed, and everyone found a cozy spot to read during our school-wide Read-a-Thon. It was a day filled with quiet excitement and literary discovery.

Thursday – Writing Workshops
Students tapped into their creativity during writing workshops, where they crafted stories, poems, and personal reflections. From silly to serious, their voices and imaginations shone through.

Friday – Book-Inspired Art
We wrapped up the week with vibrant book-inspired art projects, transforming favorite stories into paintings, collages, and other creative expressions of what books mean to us.

Literacy Week has been a joyful reminder of how reading and writing can build confidence, spark curiosity, and foster connection. We’re so proud of the creativity and enthusiasm our students brought to each day—and grateful to our teachers and families for helping make it such a memorable celebration!
