Meet our new Head of School

The Marylhurst School Board of Trustees
Appoints Dr. Leif Gustavson, Ph.D.
as the Next Head of School
Effective July 1, 2023

Dear Marylhurst Community,

It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Board of Trustees has unanimously selected Dr. Leif Gustavson as The Marylhurst School’s next Head of School. Following an extensive, national search, we believe that Leif’s character, experience and leadership qualities make him the most qualified to lead The Marylhurst School into the future.

Dr. Gustavson is an accomplished educator, leader and lifelong learner. His experience encompasses, teaching, both at the middle school and higher education levels, curriculum development and academic leadership. He has led fundraising campaigns, served on school boards and understands the importance of “Yes, and…”. Dr. Gustavson stated in his Leadership Practice statement that the four principles that guide his leadership are to: strive to build on the school’s community, build trust in professional relationships, work to make coworkers look good, and work at the top of his intelligence.

The Search Committee found him to be engaging, energetic, and passionate about education. Throughout the process Leif demonstrated a true understanding of progressive education, not only as a teacher in the classroom, but in his leadership roles teaching progressive education to fellow teachers, principals and heads of schools. In his leadership roles he has expressed his understanding and satisfaction in collaborating with faculty and staff on development, recruiting and admissions, while being guided by principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Following the tours of the campuses many teachers remarked that Dr, Gustavson was a sincere listener who shared ideas and experiences that were relevant and innovative. His interactions with students of all ages were authentic, fun and meaningful. It was obvious how much he cares for children. He conveyed his enthusiasm for what he saw happening in The Marylhurst School classrooms and expressed how it aligned with his value system.

Leif’s excitement when he was notified that the Board of Trustees selected him to be the next Head of School was contagious. I am sure that his excitement for the opportunities ahead will be felt throughout the school community. We have a wonderful school and Leif not only sees that but sees the potential that lies within. He will officially start on July 1, 2023.

Finally, I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Head of School search committee. This group of teachers, parents, alumni, and board members spent months reading resumes, holding zoom meetings and conducting multiple interviews. This group exemplified our mission of problem solving within a diverse community.

I look forward to the future of that lies ahead for all of us.

Sincerely,

Fred Wienberg
