Special Subjects

Art & Design Studio

Beginning in kindergarten, art projects are interwoven into our thematic studies. Children can explore mediums such as weaving, printmaking, sculpting, painting, drawing, and photography as natural extensions of the learning that is happening in the classroom. In middle school, the students have a dedicated Design Studio class in which they can explore different mediums in greater depth as projects become more involved.

Theater Arts

Beginning in Middle School our students orchestrate the production of a class play. From building sets and acting to creating original music our students push themselves to move beyond their comfort zone as the play comes to life.

Spanish

Exposure to Spanish begins in pre-kindergarten; formalized language instruction starts in third grade. Students are fully engaged during Spanish class with many opportunities to hear, speak, create, and move while using Spanish vocabulary. We focus on comprehension and speaking in the early years and build reading and writing abilities in later grades.

Physical Education

Physical Education is not only fun, but it is also an important piece of our social-emotional curriculum. Our program strikes a good balance between individual and group activities, as students learn the concepts of fair play, cooperation, and teamwork while moving their bodies.

Music

Music is inspired by the Orff philosophy which encourages children to experience music at their own level of understanding and in a natural environment of play. Children are encouraged to learn music through simple beats, chants, folk music, movement, and drama, and by playing pitched and unpitched instruments.

Enrichment

Enrichment is an opportunity for students of all grades to participate in an array of activities from print-making to baking, cooking, gaming, science, and more led by Marylhurst faculty. Enrichment programs are offered throughout the school year.
