Marylhurst Student Soars in National Poetry Contest!

We are thrilled to announce another wonderful achievement by one of our talented students! Bailey, a 7th grader in our Heron's class (6th-8th grade), has soared to 3rd place in the National Federation of State Poetry Societies (NFSPS) Manningham Student Trust Poetry Contest for her poem, "Spirit of the Wind." This national competition saw a remarkable 101 submissions from 22 states across the country, making Bailey's accomplishment even more impressive.

Bailey's poem will be published later this year in the NFSPS 2024 Student Prize Winners book, a testament to her creativity and skill.

Congratulations, Bailey! We are incredibly proud of you.

This recognition not only celebrates Bailey's talent but also highlights the dedication of our Heron's class teachers in fostering a love for language and literary expression.

Spirit of the Wind

Darting and spinning, as you dash across the quiet night sky,

I enjoy your playful soul.

Yet, somehow, I don't know why.

Maybe it's the way you seem so free, or maybe

it’s because I know you are hiding something

from me.

As I follow your small, curious whistle; using my ears

as eyes, I join you in the darkness

without knowing what awaits inside.

The damp gravel, mixed with mud,

crunches under my old worn shoes.

You carry curiosity, something I hope you never lose.

My direction changes, I begin to turn south.

I stop when a familiar gust pulls at the tips of my hair.

Don't worry old friend,

I’ll return,

as long as I know,

you’ll be waiting there.
