Board of Trustees

The purpose of the Marylhurst Board of Trustees is to offer guidance and direction in maintaining and perpetuating the Marylhurst tradition. The Board addresses issues that affect the quality and growth of this excellent school.

Board meetings are held monthly and the public is welcome to attend with advance notice to the Board President. Agendas are in the office before the meeting. Board meeting minutes are also published and available in the office. Due to space availability, please contact the Board President at least 48 hours before the meeting in order to place an item on the agenda.

Board Members


Melissa Dubal received her BA in Education and MA in Speech-Language Pathologyfrom Wichita State University. She has worked in both acute and sub-acute rehabilitation facilities with adults and adolescents who have suffered stroke and traumatic brain injury as well as in elementary schools as a speech therapist and evaluator with the autism team. Her family is beginning their fourth year at The Marylhurst School with son Liam in the Ravens as a 3rd grader and daughter Annie in the Meadowlarks as a 1st grader. When not shuttling back and forth between Beaverton and Oregon City, Melissa enjoys traveling and camping with her family, gardening and crafting.

Rachel Fredricks was born and raised in Oregon! She did explore other areas of the country; studying at University of Montana in Missoula, and a little life experience in the Chicagoland area before returning to home. She graduated in from the Western Culinary Institute Le Cordon Bleu in 2000, teaches consumer cooking classes, and does some morning news cooking segments on KATU. She volunteers with OSU extension service and is a Master Food Preserver. She enjoys spending time outdoors with her two boys and husband, exploring the waterways on kayaks or hiking the in the beautiful Pacific Northwest near their mountain cabin.


Brent Hunsberger has children in Marylhurst’s primary school who wake up eager to go to class. He’s committed to helping the grade school expand and supporting Marylhurst’s talented and dedicated staff. This is his first year on the board. He has a B.S. in journalism and sociology from Indiana University. He works as a financial planner at Silver Oak Advisory Group in Portland and writes The Oregonian’s weekly “It’s Only Money” personal finance column.

Meighan Swakon has a BA in Political Science from Florida International University and a MA in Special Education with a focus on language based disabilities from Florida State University. While living in Miami, FL, Meighan taught Pre-K through 8th grade students in both public and private settings and in tutoring programs for high-risk students with the Florida Department of Education. In 2012, Meighan and her family moved to Oregon, and they are thrilled to have found Marylhurst in 2014. Meighan has two daughters at The Marylhurst School, Paige is an Owl and Riley is a Meadowlark. In her free time, Meighan enjoys gardening, running, and reading.

Parent Volunteer Liaison

Jim Thomas has been a part of the Marylhurst family since 2008, when he and his wife Angela enrolled their oldest child in the preschool. They now have two children attending Marylhurst: Jaden is a sixth grader in the Hawks and their daughter Ava is a second grader in the Meadowlarks. This is Jim’s second year on the board, and he is excited to continue supporting families and the growing Parent Association. Jim has a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Lewis and Clark College and extensive post-graduate training in early childhood development. He has worked in a variety of settings, including community mental health, school-based, private practice, and corrections. In his spare time, he enjoys anything outdoors including camping, hiking, and canoeing, and going on fun adventures with his family.

Hayley Hendrickson, Strategic Planning and Development Advisor

Hayley fell in love with Oregon and its environs during her undergradute work at Linfield College. She completed her MA in International Development at The George Washington School in DC and spent many years living and working in Indonesia on forest and orangutan conservation issues. Upon returning to the States, she worked on strategic coordination and development at an international non-profit. Hayley and her husband returned to Portland ten years ago to raise their family. Her daughter Anneliese is a Hawk and son Jackson is a Raven.

Meeting Schedule

Board Meetings are held the second Monday of each month beginning in September from 6:30 – 9:30pm. The 2016-17 board meeting schedule is as follows: Sept 12, Oct 10, Nov 14, Dec 12, Jan 9, Feb 13, March 13, April 10, May 8, June 12.
