Marylhurst Ranked a 2024 Best School in Oregon

Intentionally designed to serve students’ educational, social, and emotional needs as they progress from preschool through 8th grade.

Founded in 1972, the Marylhurst School is an independent, progressive school in Oregon City, Oregon serving children from preschool through the 8th grade. In our classrooms and throughout our 38 wooded acres filled with native trees and plants, our teachers and students create experiences that arouse curiosity, stretch muscles, strengthen initiative, and stimulate questions. We guide children to know themselves, to delight in learning, and to understand their opportunities and responsibilities in our community and the world.

Our Programs

In our preschool and pre-K classrooms, an emergent, play-based curriculum flows from the personal experiences of each child and is supported by the faculty and classroom community. We strive to strengthen the child’s sense of self so that they will learn to work cooperatively as well as independently in the world.

Early Learning

In our Kindergarten through 5th grade classrooms, Marylhurst teachers foster the intellectual, creative, social, and physical development of the whole child. We respect different developmental stages and honor the process of moving from one to another, meeting each child where they are in their learning journey.

Primary School

Curriculum in middle school builds on the progressive practice established in our Primary School program: yearlong thematic studies, student-directed learning, and mentor-apprentice relationships which provide opportunities for leadership and support the development of individual passions.

Education begins with a child’s natural curiosity. We recognize that substantive learning occurs when children are actively engaged in making meaning from direct experiences. Our intimate, mixed-age classrooms and wooded 38-acre campus are laboratories for hands-on experimentation and authentic inquiry through which our students build knowledge. The Marylhurst School aims to attract and retain a diverse student body that reflects a range of backgrounds and experiences to create an environment to which everyone contributes and from which everyone benefits.
